Terraconserva Roleplay Sign-Up Form

Overview

The Terraconserva Roleplay Association (TRA) is The League and Concord’s worldbuilding-focused roleplay! Since it’s establishment in 2019, Terraconserva has served as a focal point for regional engagement, and has been referenced in several pieces of legislation recognized by the World Assembly, and currently has over 40 nations on the map!

Roleplaying is primarily done by making Wikipedia-style pages on our regional wiki, current events are posted on The League’s Regional Message Board (RMB), and planning and coordination is done in the TRA channels on the regional discord server.

Applying to Join

Every prospective player is asked to answer some start-up questions. These questions establish the basic information for your RP nation, as well as help us determine where you would belong on our map. Your answers do not have to correlate with your NationStates stats, but you can use some of them as inspiration if you so desire. To officially sign up, please respond in this thread with your answers to the below questions.

To have the Newcomer role removed, you must complete the tasks that are listed below. These tasks are designed to help you learn how to use the Wiki and get a good understanding of how everything works. When you have completed these tasks, you can apply in this thread to have the role removed and a RP moderator will get back to you as soon as possible.



When you have the role removed, you should have a good understanding of how everything works, including the Wiki. In addition, you will also get your continent role added, and you will be allowed to claim companies using our Company Claims Form


To have your Newcomer role removed, you need to complete the following


Every page you make, especially the pages that you make to have your role removed, should meet the following criteria:


1. Each page should have a decent introductory paragraph, ideally consisting of several sentences.

2. Completed infoboxes, the infoboxes on all of your pages should contain all of the relevant information.

3. All pages must be properly categorized. 

4. Finally, as always you must realistic, this is arguably one of TRA’s most important rules.


Now let’s get to what you need to do to have your newcomer role removed:


1. Make your Country, Capital City, and Leader pages:
  •  These are the required pages to be added to the map, they should be the first pages you make. To complete this task, your pages must meet the requirements to be added to the map.


2. Make 5 additional pages of your choosing:
  • They can be about anything that contributes to the building of your country’s lore. Some suggestions would be making a page for your language, a page for your ethnic group, when possible.


3. Add yourself to the following stats pages:
  •  The next step is to properly add yourself to all of the following statistics pages, make sure that you place your country in either the correct alphabetical or numerical place depending on the stat.

4. Be added to the map:

The final step is to be added to the map, map updates are typically every 2 weeks. This step shouldn’t be hard, because you most likely will already be on the map by the time you meet the rest of the requirements to have your newcomer role removed.

There's been a trend as more people look to join the TRA roleplay, and not a good one. More RPers as of late seem to remain trapped in a purgatory where they haven't completed the necessary wiki to be added to the official map, and wind up quitting or going inactive instead. Since these are newcomers and may not be familiar with wiki conventions like page categorization, and often wind up departing, we wind up with "Ghost Nations".
 
Ghost nations are nations that do not appear on the map, have pages that are difficult to find, and are often abandoned/unmaintained.

To me, this poses a few problems, but the primary one is that it's time consuming to clean up when someone leaves: Recently there was an RPer who joined TRA and switched nations multiple times, they never cleaned up the pages that they had discarded in switching nations, and one of these nations was integrated into a bunch of the statistics pages and the 2022 Winter Olympics pages. All of these multination pages required manual edits to clean up. Some of that is inevitable, but one of the more time consuming aspects of cleaning up these nations is not knowing if the RPer is still in the process of joining the RP, or has given up on the nation.*



I also think that having uncategorized pages might contribute to the onboarding issue- An important part of our wiki is that, when we find grammar, spelling, and Manual Of Style (MOS) mistakes, we can either correct them (when doing so does not change the spirit/point of the article), or bring it up on Discord to help getting the pages to convey what the authors want to other RP members.

*On a more historical note, it can be incredibly difficult to clean up the aftermath of an RPer leaving. There are still numerous people who left the region almost two years ago who have RP content we have struggled to remove.


What's a Solution Here?
Maybe the pages of new RPers should have its own category for faster reference, as well as to keep everything more organized. This category would be for nations that have not been added yet to the TRA map, and would be subsequently be removed on the fufilling of the wiki requirements.

For the statistics pages, it would be nice if we could simply scrape that information off of nation pages to automate updates there, which could make pruning inactivity RPers easier. I already have something of a solution for that involving the MediaWiki web API, but it's very much a work in progress at the moment, and even when completed would not be able to handle doing map updates for those pages.

Thankfully, Wikis already have this functionality for storing something in one place and then showing it on many other pages- It's called transclusion, and it's what templates are great at. That way, this one page can store your flag(s) for display everywhere on the wiki.

Q: Cool beans, but how do I set it up?
A: First create a page named Template:Country data Countryname but with your nation name there, and then copy over the text from a similar page. Replace image links for any flags with your own flags' links, and then save your brand new template page!

A: You can look at the documentation for Template:Country data on Wikipedia, copy from others who've made their templates already (basically every RPer starts making these by copying more experienced RPers or from copying Wikipedia, there is no shame in it), or by asking questions to others in #tra-general if you get stuck.

It will generate a first, middle, and/or last name depending on what you chose. However, it will only generate one name at a time. (This is my personal favorite)

Again, you can chose pretty much any language for the names. However, it will only do first names or last names, not both.

Hello! This post is intended for TRA RPers to request permission for nuclear power in their countries. Nuclear power is newly unbanned (as of 9/15/22) and will be permitted on a case-by-case basis as determined by TRA Staff. Please answer the following questions completely and thoroughly; the level of detail you put into your answers could mean the difference between acceptance and denial.

1. Country Name
2. Amount of power plants/reactors desired, and why
3. When and how did your country get nuclear power?
4. What is your country's level of nuclear research?
5. What is your country's economy/GDP?
6. How much of your country's power will be generated by nuclear energy? (Can be a percentage)

Mods may respond to your post asking follow-up questions. If your answers are satisfactory, you will be allowed to establish nuclear power in your country to the extent that you're permitted. If your answers are unsatisfactory, you will be given a reason/reasons why, and you may be able to correct or adjust your answers. 

Also ensure your Discord username is either in your post, or in your account signature, so staff can properly identify you in the server, especially if your Discord name is different from your country name.

Making nations can involve a lot of graphics, documentation, etc. Making all that can be difficult! Here's a thread for sharing resources we find online surrounding making government documents, flags, maps, the whole thing.


I'll be updating this OP periodically with resources if anyone posts them (or if I find any other cool ones).



Flag making websites:


  • Flag Designer: This website has a limited selection of symbols that users can put on their flags, but has a robust number of patterns. Perhaps best of all, the website allows you to save your work as an SVG (scalable vector graphic) file, which means it can then be scaled up and down without loss of detail found in other file formats.
  • Tennessine: This website is a bit more work to figure out, but it makes very interesting flags, with lots of customization possibilities. There's even filters to provide "inverted color" flag copies. It provides options to download user created flags as both SVGs as well as PNGs.
  • Flag Creator: I cannot in good conscience recommend this tool unless you really dig paying to remove watermarks and deal with paywalls. The features included on this website are by no means unique, and there are free tools (or free versions of them) which do the exact same thing without begging for your money. A link to this accursed website is here if you wish to sate a morbid curiosity. 
  • Fake Flag: Allows you to add whatever modern real life flag symbols and patterns you want. It supports PNG downloads. Only thing about it is that it takes a good long while to load up when you open the page.

Map making resources:
  • Something About Maps: A blog from a university educated cartographer, it has a section (where the link points to) devoted to tutorials ranging from how to make map effects in tools ranging from Blender (which is free), Illustrator (not free), and Photoshop (not free). That said, even though the content may be using these tools, the lessons contained can help with making maps in other software.
  • Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator: This will generate maps, usually islands. It could be useful to make a world map, or a continent, or even just an island. Turning off all of the layers means that the website basically becomes a coastline generator, and that could be the basis of a whole other map. Interestingly, the download section has a ton of features, you can download in normal file formats like PNGs and JPEGs at varying levels of resolution, as well as SVGs. More exotically, you can download GIS data (used in professional settings for topography work) as well as JSON data (for working with the output with programs or scripts).
  • Map to Globe: This allows you to put a 2D map onto a 3D sphere. Caveat- that means distortions around the poles and equator unless the 2D map's projection is accounting for this already. It's a very useful tool to get from a Equirectangular projection of a world (probably the ones you'd see in geography textbooks) into other projections, and to get a better idea of how the world 'wraps around the edge'. In terms of output, you can save new projection types as PNGs, and it supports making GIFs of the globe rotating with your map on it. It also supports getting multiple screenshotted angles of the globe as PNG image files.
  • WikiProject Maps & Conventions: Want to make a Wikipedia style map but don't know how they style maps? Well this has links to every Wikipedia standard map, from the Orthographic maps of single countries that people often put on their wiki pages to the challenging Topographic maps which are used as backdrops for many different maps.
